When the Vikings traveled from Norway to Iceland in the 9th century, they brought with them a breed of horse unlike any other: compact, sturdy, thickly-maned and powerful - able to withstand the harsh climes and the rigors of settlement in a wild land.   

So ideal was this sure-footed, willing steed that further importation was banned; the herds seen running free in the Icelandic countryside are the direct descendants of that Viking stock.
